Vadim Radaev
Economic-Sociological Alternative of Karl Polanyi
P. 20–34

Today the papers by Karl Polanyi get more and more acknowledgment including that fact that he criticized radically the formal economic theory and economic liberalism. What is the reason for this paid attention and what does the author suggest us? This paper discusses some methodological basic ideas of Karl Polanyi and focuses on those analytical possibilities that were disclosed by these ideas for different research areas. The author begins the review from the substantive definition of the “economic” and analyzes the possibilities to use it on the example of the term “home labour”. This in turn leads us to the broader topic of problems of economic survival and moral economy. Further on the next part of the paper is devoted to the most interesting topic in Polanyi’s work - to the reciprocity form of the economic integration. The paper ends by transferring to the macro level discussion about capitalism and self-regulated markets, the key topic of the book “The great transformation”.

Mikhail Sukharev
Social Anti-institutions
P. 63–73

During the last ten years economists draw more and more attention to the institutional theory; large-scale social-economic changes in the post-soviet countries facilitate this growth of interest. However the practice has shown that general economic theory faces the big difficulties in explanation of the economic phenomena in the societies with the system of informal institutions that considerably differ from the western ones. The paper considers the interaction of formal and informal institutions. With the help of the analysis of the interaction of the rules and techniques the anti-institutions origin is studied. The function of the institutions is described from the ideo-material systems point of view. Finally, the processes of the formalization and takedown of the anti-institutions are under focus.

Debut Studies

Natalya Burchilina
Towards the Question of the Business Culture: Russian Peculiarities of the Entrepreneurial Practices Formation (the Example of the Moscow Construction Company)
P. 74–82

The paper is prepared by a HSE student with the help of the survey conducted in April-May 2003 within practicum on economic sociology. The paper provides an attempt to consider the transformation of the business culture from the perspective of the settled cultural grounds. The group of entrepreneurs in the paper means that the partners are not only linked to each other but to the people working in one market and competing with each other. In this sense the subject of the analysis is that how do the competition shape and “close” these circles.
